The term Sustainable Transportation Planning came into use as a
logical resulting from sustainable development, and is used to describe types
of transport, and systems of transport planning, which are consistent with extensive
concerns of sustainability. This is not just a singled definition of
Sustainable Transportation Planning it keeps on varying as per the regions.
Sustainable transport refers to the wide subject of transport
that is or approaches being justifiable. Transportation sustainability is generally
being measured by transportation system efficiency and productivity as well as
the environmental impacts of the system.
Sustainable transport systems make a progressive impact to
the environmental, economic and social sustainability of the societies they assist.
Transport systems exist to provide social and economic connections, and people
quickly grab the opportunities offered by increased movement. The advantages of
increased mobility need to be weighed against the environmental, social and
economic costs that transport systems pose.
Sustainability spreads beyond just the functioning
efficiency and discharges. A Life-cycle assessment involves production and
post-use considerations. A cradle-to-cradle design is more important than a
focus on a single factor such as energy efficiency.
